Around 3,000 people commit suicide in Afghanistan every year, officials said Monday.
Majority - 80 percent - who commit suicide are females.
Qadria Yazdan Parast, a member of Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission, said that most of the suicide cases go unreported in the country.
Speaking at an event on suicide prevention, she said that the families avoid reporting the cases of female suicide due to fear that it would tarnish their honour.
According to the commissioner, most of the females who commit suicide are aged between 16 and 18.
They kill themselves due to many reasons including mental illness or domestic violence, according to health ministry officials.
Worldwide, more than 800,000 people die by suicide and up to 25 times as many make a suicide attempt every year.
